Downtown Barrington's First Holiday Season on the New Cook and Station Streets

At 5 p.m. on Saturday, December 5, the village tree will be lit at the corner of Cook and Station Streets. The sidewalks around it are brand new. So are the clay brick accents, the larger outdoor dining areas and the plantings along the curb.

This is the first holiday season on that finished core. The next round of change is concentrated on Park Avenue, where several new dining rooms are still being built. That shapes where the season's events take place.

The Festival Fills the Blocks That Were Rebuilt This Year

The Village of Barrington's development and construction updates page lists Phase 1 of the downtown streetscape enhancement as complete. The work pulled out the old pavers and put in new sidewalks with clay brick accents. It also moved the trash enclosure on Station Street, widened the outdoor dining areas and added landscaping along Cook Street, Station Street and the northwest stretch of Park Avenue.

The road work matches it. South Cook Street and East Station Street in the Village Center were both on the 2026 road improvement list, and the Village marks that work complete as well.

That puts the Barrington Holiday Festival & Tree Lighting Ceremony on fresh pavement and new sidewalk. The Village lists the location as Cook & Station Streets, from 3 to 6 p.m. Families who spend the evening there will be using the brick-edged sidewalks and widened patio zones the Village built over the past year, this time with free hot chocolate and an ice carving demonstration on top.

December 5, From Late Morning to Dark

Two separate Santa visits happen on the same day, so it's worth planning the day in order. Here is how the Village and Barrington's White House have scheduled it:

  1. 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Holiday Open House with Santa at Barrington's White House, 145 West Main Street, with cookies, refreshments and family photos. You have to register through the event's Eventbrite page.
  2. 3 p.m. The downtown festival starts at Cook and Station, with family activities, free hot chocolate and ice carving demonstrations.
  3. 4:30 p.m. The BHS Madrigals perform, leading into the ceremony.
  4. 5 p.m. The tree is lit.
  5. After the lighting until 6 p.m. Santa rolls in on a firetruck, walks through the crowd, then settles in for visits and photos at Santa's House on Cook Street. The Village suggests bringing cameras and letters to Santa.

The Village notes that Santa visits at Barrington's White House need registration, while the evening visits on Cook Street are part of the street festival.

The Rest of the Season Runs Along Main Street

Take away the tree lighting, and most of the November and December programming downtown sits on or near Main Street. The White House carries most of the calendar. A needlepoint and mahjong lounge in the Ice House Mall fills in weeknights.

The Village's events guide lists the two-day art sale and the Nutcracker tea. The White House's own listing describes the Holiday Tea on December 6 as an event for women 21 and older. The Vasil show features the Eurovision performer in a holiday set. Home for the Holidays brings Nancie Tobison back to perform with Barrington High School alumni.

The Pepper Pot runs ticketed theme nights alongside its regular classes and open play, and you can book a table starting at $10. Its December 17 Merry Mahjong is the last downtown event on the calendar before the Home for the Holidays show two days later.

The Gift List Has New Addresses

The holiday shopping walk downtown has more stops than it did a year ago, and they line up along the same short route as the events.

The Ice House Mall now has two shops the Village lists as open. Bell House Books is a woman-owned independent bookstore with titles for every age and a schedule of community programs. The Pepper Pot sells needlepoint canvas, fibers and accessories on one side and runs a lounge for needlepoint classes, mahjong classes, open play and leagues on the other. Between the two, you can pick up a book, a canvas project and a mahjong lesson in one stop.

Main Street adds two more. Posh Plants & Curios at 122 E. Main Street is a plant boutique that also sells home goods, upscale decor, candles, rugs, textiles and collectibles. On the same street, Long Story Short Pub occupies 113 E. Main Street. Back on the rebuilt blocks, Fix Sandwich Shop has moved to 113 S. Cook Street, with homemade bread, Italian street sandwiches and baked goods right where the festival takes place.

With the White House at 145 West Main Street, the season's events and these shops all sit within the Main, Cook and Station core.

Park Avenue Is Where Next December Is Being Built

On Park Avenue and nearby, the downtown of the next few years is still taking shape.

The most talked-about project is at 133 Park Avenue. That's where chef Fabio Viviani is opening BOCADO, a tapas restaurant upstairs, with a second concept, Retoro Omakase, planned for the floor below. The Village's status line for BOCADO reads "opening soon," and the restaurant's own site shows a coming-soon page. In the announcement covered by the Daily Herald, Viviani described the menu's range:

"Spain is really the starting point, but the menu allows us to travel through South America and across the Mediterranean."

The same Daily Herald report puts Retoro's timing at early 2027.

Three other restaurants in town are still in interior construction, according to the Village. Kurbside Pizza, the food truck, is opening its first brick-and-mortar location at 215 N. Hough Street, with New York-style artisan pizzas, paninis and salads. Taco Maya is building its 12th location at 108 S. Northwest Highway, the former Dunkin' space. Bundle is coming to the Shops of Flint Creek with East-Asian dumplings, noodles and bubble tea.

The bigger change for Park Avenue is the street itself. The Village is finishing construction designs for the Park Avenue Plaza, which turns a short section of roadway into an outdoor gathering space with patio and dining space for the businesses beside it. The Village expects construction to start in fall 2026 or spring 2027.

The Golden Triangle site between the Metra tracks, the CN tracks and Hough Street has a project of its own, called Mylo. It's a mixed-use building with 125 residences, more than 12,000 square feet of restaurant and retail space, and 37 car condominiums at the back of the site. The Village lists its construction start as fall 2026. A January Daily Herald report said the plaza's timing is tied to construction starting on that building.

On December 5, the tree will be lit on streets finished this year, while the Park Avenue Plaza is still in design.

If you're thinking about listing in spring, it pays to know which downtown blocks are already finished and which are still under construction. The Tara Kelleher Team follows these projects season by season and can show you how they figure into how buyers see your home. Get your home valuation and staging plan, and we'll walk you through it over hot chocolate on Cook Street.
